My service provider is down in my area 
....but luckily I have 4g on my iPad . However , I don't know how much data being in the forum for say an hour will use up . Any ideas ?

An hour shouldn't use much Baz, what is your data allowance? I have 2 gig on my phone and rarely use a fraction of it. I have only used 1% and my 4g was on for more than an hour today when I was out because I forgot to switch it off after I had looked for something. If you go to your data settings you should have a graph of how much you have used.
does it not say on your contract how many gigs you get?

Browsing the internet uses comparatively little data. Surfing the web for an hour will use approximately 23MB. So if you browse the web for an hour every day, for an entire month, youâd use about 700MB.
For heavy Twitter, Instagram and Facebook users the good news is that basic use of these services doesnât use much data, especially if youâre using an app. But watch out, regularly uploading pictures and watching videos can rinse your usage.

Most devices allow you to check how much data you have used. My provider has an app that shows your remaining data - have you got an app from your provider?
P.S. I only have 750mb each month and usually have about 500mb left and I use it daily.

I have 2gigabytes EC, I rarely manage to use 300. It's on most days if I am out and about at some point. I didn't ask for 2, it just came with the package I got.

But luckily it had come back on by the time I got up this morning .....much to my relief 
Baz, have you contemplated checking to see if any of your neighbours have open wifi connects?
You could leach a few mb from them.
