I believe they were childhood sweethearts.
I first became aware of Annie Glenn through the movie "The Right Stuff" (which I strongly recommend if you haven't seen it). They've clearly been exceptionally close: Annie is a stammerer, and John was always very protective of her. If the movie is to be believed, the other wives of the Mercury astronauts also became very protective, to the point that they snubbed the then-vice president Lyndon Johnson because Annie wasn't able to talk to him!
As for John: served in two wars; worked as a test pilot (unbelievably dangerous in those days); went into space on both Mercury and the Space Shuttle (at the age of 77! ); and served for many years in the Senate.
There were missteps (*cough* Savings and loan *cough*), but on the whole: a remarkable man.
