Saw this on the news today and Googled it. Found an article in the Guardian. I was almost knocked over when I recognised the pub in the picture (The New Barrack Tavern), one which I pass on the way to the football !!

A bit like 'planking' I think it will happen for a short period then fade. I understand the police forces are now issuing cease and desist warnings.

I believe some people are carrying knives and adopting threatening behaviour which is why people are concerned.

That sounds reasonable. But I wonder how (timeline wise) this - as in was there a noticeable clown-phobia that some people apparently suffer from fits in with it's publication?

Probably - at least in the modern era.
It certainly wasn't Stephen King: "It" popularised the concept, but it didn't create it.
