From early next year you will have to log in to a personal account to access BBC's iPlayer.

Although ITV and Channel 4 have required this for some time, it's a big change for the BBC.

By the way, if you were to try and log in on the BBC site at present you get the message:
We're running some scheduled maintenance on our systems today, which means you can't sign in or register for a BBC account right now. We're sorry for the inconvenience, but things will be back to normal by tea time tonight.
Hmm i'm in straight away
playing fine
The BBC maintenance seems to have been done as one can log in. I had already got an account (I think I set one up ages ago to comment on something). You now have to have your post code in the registration details. BBC says that's to provide a more localised service. Some might wonder if that's their way on checking that you've got a TV licence.
Thanks for all the info El Loro I read somewhere that from today you will have to add your postcode to your sign in details too

I went on BBC tonight and was not using iPlayer just logging in and it sent me to a new login page where you enter your details again including a postcode and they have tightened the password requirements so you need to use another password if your is not up to scratch.
Did all that and it failed to work. Rubbish!
I got mine so that I could comment in the 'have your say' stuff.....then found there were a lot of other things that it did too!
Mine worked fine once I had added my post code - my password must have been strong enough, 'cos I wasn't asked for a new one!

You missed the point. They asked for a new one which I gave them. You can see your new one as you type. I think the site must have fallen over at the point I pressed send.

But some sites still need you to sign in again with the new details and as I didn't have to change, I didn't know what it might have asked of you!
Try it again and if it doesn't accept what you feel is what you made the new password then click on the 'forgotten password' (or whatever they're calling it) link and make a(nother) new one.

I don't think you need to be a conspiracy theorist to assume that the Post Code check is really to do with checking up on TV Licenses. As some of the commenters here have pointed out, the "localised service" line sounds rather weak when one considers that one of the main point of iPlayer is that you can watch it from anywhere.
TBH, I'm surprised they don't just ask you to give your TV license number (and I speculated about this when this story came up earlier). Perhaps there are legal or security issues?
As a rule, I never give my real date of birth on website registration details, so I'm just as suspicious of giving my Post Code. As some have suggested elsewhere, expect a lot of people suddenly "moving" to W1A 1AA or W12 8QT...

I always use the postcode S1 1DJ.
It was a nightclub called Gatecrasher and burnt down hence the code 1DJ. It's just wasteland at the moment.
I never use my real postcode. Not even for the BBC.

They would have to get up very early to catch me out, in fact they would have to stay up all night.
