BIG BROTHER 2016 has just kicked off and already producers are considering the future of the reality show.

Launch night brought in record low viewing figures and fans are calling for the series to be cancelled.

Despite the residence being revamped and redecorated and the addition of a second secret house, Big Brother fans seem disinterested in this year’s contestants.

The first episode of Big Brother brought Channel 5 and average of just 1.5m viewers, the smallest opening audience in the show's long history.

Well, it's wouldn't be the first time that BB producers have held "emergency meetings" in the first couple of weeks after their carefully laid plans fell flat. I rather doubt though that there's any intention to scrap the show - not after they spent so much money on the new "double house", which was intended not just for this series but as an investment for future series (up to 2018, apparently). What probably will happen is that they'll reconsider their plans for future weeks (pretty much essential now, from what I've heard) and they'll reconsider the series length (not new either, which is why they never state exactly how long the series will be at the start).

One potential proviso though is the persistent rumour that C5/Endemol want to drop the "civilian" series and concentrate on CBB, so who knows...

Speaking personally: FMs on the BB threads will know that although I'm still lurking around, I haven't actually been watching this series (so far) other than launch night. This was actually a decision I made before the series start, and was influenced as much by personal matters as it was by a general fatigue induced by the last couple of horror shows and a gut feeling that this year would be more of the same. However, that "gut feeling" was rather confirmed for me by the launch show: BB17 isn't a move back to "old school" BB (perhaps unrealistic anyway, but it's still what many viewers want), but neither is it the true "game changer" that the trailers implied (e.g. the "two competing houses" series that many thought we were getting - and may actually have been a welcome change - already appears to have degenerated into a rehash of the appallingly badly handled "Halfway House" of BB8).

What we're getting instead is yet more meddling and manufactured drama: I can't be bothered anymore, and I'm clearly not the only one. I'm not saying I won't be watching at all - I enjoy the live threads, and I was intending to watch on Friday only for other things to come up - but I'm not going to be more than a casual viewer of BB17 unless there are some major changes PDQ...
