I've received an email from HM Revenue and Customs stating that they owe me some money and that I should create a Tax Gateway Account. They've provided me with a link to follow the process, but for some reason, I'm feeling a little skeptical about its legitimacy.

This is the link: create a government gateway (I've removed the link as it is a scam and should not be clicked on - El Loro)

Thoughts?

I have recieved a few e-mails in the past alleging to be from the Inland Revenue wanting to give me money they owed me.  I always treated them as being a bit dodgy.

When the Tax people did owe me money they just sent me a letter and a cheque.

El Loro may be able to give you some better advice than I can but I'd give that link a wide berth if I were you.

HMRC phishing emails, texts and tax scams

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will never use texts or emails to:

  • tell you about a tax rebate or penalty
  • ask for personal or payment information

Forward any suspicious emails or details of text messages to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk or check HMRC’s guidance on recognising scams if you’re not sure.

Report a disclosure of personal details to HMRC

Contact HMRC at security.custcon@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk if you think you’ve given any personal information in reply to a suspicious email or text.

Include brief details of what you disclosed (eg name, address, HMRC User ID, password) but don’t give your personal details in the email.
