A new Star Trek series has been announced

A new Star Trek television series will launch in January 2017, CBS has announced.

According to the show's website, it "will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations".

The hugely successful show franchise celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2016.

"There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series," said David Stapf, president of CBS TV studios.

Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote and produced the blockbuster films Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) will serve as executive producer for the series.

"Everyone here has great respect for this franchise and we're excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately," added Stapf.

The series will begin with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network before running exclusively on CBS All Access, the network's digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.

It is also expected to be distributed around the world by CBS Studios International.

The original Star Trek spawned a dozen feature films and five television series, and is still licensed on platforms across over 190 countries.

According to StarTrek.com the franchise still generates more than a billion social media impressions every month.

The new series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond, to be released in summer 2016.

I'm afraid its just another attempt to make money out of a successful franchise. The first series was the best. The following 'versions' where just a money making exercise, in my opinion

I suppose it could be levelled at many different series, films and series spin offs from films that they are just money making exercises. I guess ultimately it will come down to whether they have a good story to tell. If they do (and given the advances in TV and film making) then it could be quite spectacular.

It's funny I guess that I have a similar opinion of soaps. They have all done birth, death, marriage, murder, affairs, sexuality, disaster and business issues (to name a few) to death. Is there any point in soaps now if they are just repeating themselves year after year?

As ever I will give this series a go and see what it's like. I am definitely morw interested in the world of Srar Trek than Star Wars.

EC, you've hit the nail on the head but your post could be reduced to simple adage, 'the proof is in the pudding'.

For my part, I found the Star Trek 'universe' from The Next Generation deathly dull. That goes for the Deep Space 9 and Voyager too. The series with the Quantum Leap bloke carried over the same weaknesses.

I didn't have much time for the 'story arcs' nor the space opera aspect. Nor the techno babble deus ex machinas, nor that every crew member was exemplary in their own unique way and an episode would focus on a crew member and their moment to shine. God, those shows were so tedious!

I always preferred the swashbuckling Kirk to the diplomatic straight laced Picard.
