I was talking to someone last week here in Sheffield and one scheme that is running and being run by normal individuals is to collect unwanted fruit from people who have fruit trees and too much fruit. This fruit is either squeezed for apple juice or the apples are redistributed.

 

And I am sure that in common with other towns and cities, supermarkets now give away unwanted food items to charities to redistribute.
