The story of Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles) was regarded as being based on William Randolph Hearst. Hearst was a powerful newspaper magnate, the Rupert Murdoch of his time.
Hearst was not happy. He wanted the film destroyed.
Citizen Kane was a box office flop and at the Oscars ceremony was booed every time the film was mentioned.
