I think what it is is that when a customer wishes to leave they are sent through to 'retentions' and their job is to keep the customer at almost any cost, usually via big discounts.

One lady told a story of how she said that she would like to cancel 9 times in 45 mins, yes 45 mins.

This fella from Sky tried to say that they don't have a script, but he did say something that I found interesting, they incentivise staff to give a good service - not too difficult to see how that works as he also said they get paid less if they don't give 'good service'

My Sis inlaw was with them until recently switching to Virgin... They were paying close to ÂĢ100 a month!! So the guy on the phone managed to reduce it to about half that (I think) it was a massive discount.... Anyway after that month ended they lost half their channels etc... My Sis inlaw is good at this stuff and was fuming as she had repeatedly checked nothing would change but the price... After that they wanted nothing to do with Sky so cancelled.

This thread sums up why I've never signed up for Sky and never will. The stories about how Sky tries to "retain" customers aren't new: they've been around since the company started.

What gets me though is how so many customers continue paying such ridiculous monthly charges to a commercial TV company, but then complain about having to pay their license fee, which works out at roughly ÂĢ12 a month. By comparison, the BBC remains a bargain...

I am always telling people I meet who are Sky customers to get on the phone and drive sown the cost of their package. Everyone knows they can and they do, so if you are prepared to play hard ball you can reap the benefits.

BTW Jen, I have been a Virgin customer for ages now and I regularly (every 18 months) get onto them and negotiate them down - never failed yet.

I completely agree. Whether you like or dislike the BBC as a company or not I find it hard to argue at the value of all the television and radio output.
