Information on the Virgin speed increases:

If you’re an existing broadband customer on 50Mbps or below, 100Mbps or 152Mbps, we’ll offer you an upgrade to our more powerful speeds of SuperFibre 70Mbps, VIVID 150Mbps and VIVID 200Mbps

So not the rumoured doubling. People with older super hubs may need newer ones but Virgin will tell you if that's the case.

The upgrade speeds are being rolled out from 1 October for the next 6 months.

I don't know if you accepting the upgrade means that your contract period with them starts all over again. That's something which you may need to find out if that's a concern.

When I went on myvirginmedia account on Friday I noticed that the speed increase was available in my area so I went ahead and ordered it. I got an email back saying that they would notify me within 48 hours of the cost (not that there's any change in the cost - it's just their standard response).

They were a bit later than the 48 hours but I got a further email this morning giving the costs and saying that the speed had been increased.

I did a speed test to confirm this:

Download 74.06 Mbps (it was about 53 before)

Upload 5.09 Mbps (it was about 3.4 before)

So about a 40% increase for download and 50% for upload.

My setup is wired and speeds do seem to suffer a bit with wireless so my results are at the top end of the advertised speeds.

I may have had a brain fade but I could have mentioned it on the forum that I very recently negotiated the cost of my broadband down by Β£10 per month.

I was on the 100mb package, but as I knew they were increasing the speed again I was happy to step back for a month or two safe in the knowledge I would be getting a speed increase around October-ish.

Boy, do I feel slightly smug at the moment.

Of course in 18 months time I will be back on doing the same and pushing my package cost down. *thumbsup*

I'm hoping for an updated Superhub as mine only has the single band and not dual band.

I think that if they decide you need a newer Superhub that they charge you Β£5-99 for the postage.

Yes, they tried that when I asked for a new one, I told them that they gave both my sister and mother one without charge.

I can wait for the appropriate time  I will get my free upgrade
