This thread is an experiment.

I was trying to find a way to provide the answers to the “How well do you know British films?” quiz featured on EC’s thread:

Yogi suggested a “Spoiler” thread, but the problem with that is that the full text of the OP still shows up on the Home Page.

What I’m going to try instead is to post the answers as a reply to this Topic, so hopefully the only people who will see them are those who already know what to expect!

(If I’ve forgotten something, or if anyone has a problem with this, please let me know ASAP.)

Firstly, I want to try and string out the first few sentences here so that the answers don’t show on the “Recent Comments” list!

Okay, here we go: I believe these are the correct answers to the BBC’s “How well do you know British films” quiz.

1) As a youth I used to weep in fishmongers

2) Skyfall

3) Don’t Look Back in Anger (and yes: they’ve got the title wrong!)

4) Alfred Hitchcock

5) Terrible Tim

6) Great Expectations

7) Hamlet

8) Eight minutes

9) Casino Royale

10) Jane Campion

11) Crystal Palace Park

12) Steel

13) Britain’s declaration of war on Germany

14) Liam Neeson

15) Eleven

Re. 3...I chose that one on the basis of it being a trick question... it wasn't made in the 1960's... because it wasn't made at all!

However; i assume Look Back in Anger was late 1950's?

Yes - 1959 (The play was first performed in 1956).

I did share your suspicions that it might be a trick question, though!

I knew 2 because I remember there was a big fuss about it when it came out: it wasn't just the highest grossing British movie at the UK box office - it was the highest grossing movie at the UK box office full stop.

Skyfall made £102.9 million in the UK; Avatar (the highest-grossing movie worldwide) made £94 million.

Deathly Hallows Part 2 made £73.1 million...

15 is (IMO) very difficult because John Barry actually worked on twelve Bond films (which is why I got that question wrong too). However, he didn't write the score for "Dr No" - he only arranged the "James Bond Theme" for it (and his orchestra performed it).

Well done EL on your work in getting the answers

Oddly enough for question 8, the trivia page on the IMDB site for that film has it at 6 minutes rather than 8.

I agree with you that question 15 was unfair.

Given a Harry Potter option i had to go for it!

"Wow" re. the success of Skyfall.
