i went to hare & hounds pub in kings heath birmingham a few years back,they had a female comedianne on, it was a lesbian & gay night but i went anyway cos i knew bar staff, this women comedianne did this stand up & sang 'calling occupants of interplanetary craft' by the carpenters, she reckoned it was the official song to greet aliens with...anyway said comedianne turned out to be sarah millican...i heard shes moved on to better things...

well, thats what its all about...
I think we always make the assumption that extra-terrestrial life will be similar to us with similar or better technology.
What if extra-terrestrial life was actually gaseous or some other decidedly non human style being?
Who is to say that their forms of communication are not light based or even telepathic?
What if they are already here and keeping schtumm (sp)?
But if we could communicate with them in technologies we posses then my message would be;
"My God, it's full of stars"
EC, nearly a year ago I mentioned to you Olaf Stapledon's book "Star Maker". It was written in 1937 and, although not an easy book to read, it covers very similar topics as in your post.
