the story behind the Sinfonia appears to vary a bit depending on who's answering and to whom, and probably exists somewhere between "student prank" and "experiment in the nature of music".

Judge for yourself: here they are performing at the Royal Albert Hall!

 

As one YouTube poster pointed out, the most remarkable thing about it is how they all manage to get through it without collapsing in hysterical laughter!
