For those who don't know, the Portsmouth Sinfonia was formed by students of Portsmouth School of Art during the '70s.
The entrance requirements were simple: you either had to be a non-musician, or a musician playing an instrument you'd never played before...

For a second then you had me sweating, I thought you were going to say it was an orchestra made up of people with learning difficulties and I was about to delete the thread.
I was about to add "I hope they improved" having read your post, but notice a second video, which I will now watch.

the story behind the Sinfonia appears to vary a bit depending on who's answering and to whom, and probably exists somewhere between "student prank" and "experiment in the nature of music".

As one YouTube poster pointed out, the most remarkable thing about it is how they all manage to get through it without collapsing in hysterical laughter!
