First up, I'm not asking you to give me any money.

Unfortunately, my Canada plans are all up in the air due to the fact that I can't get any funding. No student loans company, the British council, the BFI, or even the Canada loans company will support me. I'm pretty gutted by this, as if I can't get any funding, I won't be able to afford to attend the school whilst also living out there.

But could there be a way?

Crowdfunding has become very popular over the last few years, especially for people developing new projects, gadgets, websites etc. But I never thought there would be a site dedicated to fund people's education.

Turns out there is: https://hubbub.net/

There's a fair few people on there asking "Joe Public" to help fund their further education plans. In return for the donations, they offer "rewards" based on how much you're willing to donate.

Is this weird? Would you consider donating money to someone you don't know, just so they can bum around and be a student? (Okay, that last part was a joke)

But seriously, would you?

Should I start up one?  My rewards could be gold ties.

What will you have to offer anybody willing to fund your education in Canada?....

These are the sort of things people will want to know Rawky.

With film it's tricky. Sure, I can give you shout outs, an executive producer credit, a gold tie with my face on, movie posters. But would anyone want them? I'd need to "make it" for it to worth something.

I don't know what the answer is Rawky, but, have you tried to get work in (all be it runner or tea boy) in a film or TV company?

I have. I've done that on and off for a while. But now I want to really focus on film production in a city where the industry is booming and work will be readily available. But there's so much more I want to learn as well.

Have you tried using your CV/film to get work in Canada?

I'd need a work permit, but I am eligible for student visa. Once I've completed the course, and gained more knowledge and hands on, networked, gained contacts, I'll be able to apply for a work permit.

I've already got a spot on the course. It's just the cost of it now.

What is the 'course' going to teach you?

Syd

How much do you need Rawks?   No, I'm not offering, sorry - wish I could.   I'm just wondering, if it's not mega dosh - you might make something from the crowdfunding thing?   Some people obviously make it work - does it cost anything to give it a go - maybe some rich people with an interest in the arts might go for that sort of thing?    Offer to keep them updated with your progress, and credit them on anything that you do.   I guess the key might be a really creative blurb to get people interested... but I can't help you there.  (I've not checked the link) can you post links to stuff you've done - or link something on youtube to the crowdfunding thing?   The internet's a big place ... and some people have money - I know someone who sold a packet of polo mints for more than a tenner on ebay once.... so you never know....

Even if I had the money to help education there are so many 'media' students of different  types of media out there already it is impossible for the majority of them to make it anyway ..  and that sort of educational qualification is not one that can be used for anything else either ..  so fraid I'd not fund a media student if I had any dosh .....sorry

I might.  If I had the money - if it was something I'd seen online and liked.  I've funded an independent (music) artist before by paying for a CD before it was made - waited two years for it.   So.. you never know...
