Thanks for the input so far.

The plan is to cruise to see the Northern Lights, possibly to Iceland. Only I want to go, my other mate who wants to see them has a family and he just can't justify it .

Would like to try and take a cruise which incorporates a lot of scenery en route in particular fjords. Not wanting anything too special cabin wise as I only intend to sleep in it and shower in it. There is only me so I feel a single person premium coming on.

This looks interesting and sort of what I am looking for:

Some chums who have a dislike of those huge floating hotels have booked themselves onto a Norwegian working boat in order to see the Northern Lights.  I think these ships are generally used to transport cargo and serve as a sort of bus service for the locals but they do have accommodation.  Not sure of the prices involved and whether your ticket would be cheaper if you were to offer to take a seat in the galley and help with the rowing,  I don't recommend this, though  (those who remember Charlton Heston in the film Ben Hur will know what I mean)

Seriously, we like very much the Rhine Valley, and looked at some of the river cruises from KÃķln downover.
They just seem to be a non-stop orgy of food and drink, and no exercise. I assume that most cruises are the same. Gyms and stationary machines don't work for me.
For someone mit weight gain issues, it's a non starter.
Hope that helps, if I may say so.

The weather is not so much an issue for me as long as I get to see the sights. If your daughter has any advice that would be good.

I suppose if it's big enough then a brisk few circuits around the deck could be of help, but a river boat sounds like it could be less roomy.

Sounds a bit like a prison ship

I would like a bit more comfort than that, with access to Interweb.

Never done it before, but I'm about to do it! Woo hoo! (I'm a bit excited).

We're cruising around the Canaries over the Christmas week. We go to four of the Canary Islands, Madeira and Morocco. We get quite a lot of time off the boat, so hopefully I won't feel too confined.... I do like to get out and explore on my hols!

I've looked into cruising the fjords before EC, and if I enjoy this one it will definitely be next on my list of things to do, but in a warmer month than December
