Got to work and was told that one of my colleagues had taken his own life on Monday evening.
I would never have guessed that there was anything troubling him, he really did not seem unhappy and always seemed quite an upbeat person.

How very, very sad .....we had a relative that took their own life ....and like you say there was nothing obvious previously ....or at least nothing anyone had picked up on .

I did not know myself so I asked, the best anyone could do was say he was in his 50's. To me I would say he looked about 50-53.

From what we have been told he seems to have left notes and messages, as to what they say we don't yet know as there is an investigation ongoing. Hopefully the family may get some idea why he did what he did from what he may have written.
Thanks SP. Strangely enough, the job we do means we are around death more than most, hopefully for those who are most affected, their training and experiences will help them come to terms easier than most.

Jeeze.. that would be a shock. Poor bloke - I feel for those left behind though. Hopefully he's explained in his note (and not blamed anyone) I always think it must be so hard to deal with something like that if you don't know why they did it.
EC, one of my best friends committed suicide 15 years ago, I'd seen him a few days earlier and I knew he was off, but never imagined that he was in that realm. I felt as his friend, crap for ages, thinking if I hadn't dashed off to do this that and the other, it might have been different. But it wouldn't have been. He hung himself, but also he pulled all of the gas fittings out in his flat too, so it seemed he wanted to go out with a bang. As much as I feel sad and miss my mate, I also think why would you endanger other peoples lives? A whole block of flats could have gone out that night.

True Cinds.... I guess they must have been not quite in their right mind at the time anyway. I do think in some circumstances I feel more for those left behind than the person who's chosen the way out. They don't have to live with the wondering 'why' and 'what if' and missing their friend/parent/sibling or whatever.

My sympathies to all who've experienced loss in such truly upsetting circumstances.
It's so saddening to think that someone/anyone can be in such misery to want to do such a thing.

I think suicide is such an emotive topic that why anybody would chose a certain way to do it is just one of the unanswered questions.
