Ashamed to say as kids we used that rhyme all the time, when trying to pick things...

Jezza has been especially beyond the pale recently though - with the "slope" comment etc. He needs a slap.

I know what you mean, Rog. When I was young the N word was used without thinking in the rhyme, but by the time my sons were small and chanting the rhyme it had been replaced by 'tigger' (thank goodness, as I would have throttled them for using the N word).

Same here and done by all races .. it was one of the rhymes you learnt off by heart in the playground in infant school without even thinking of the words and their meaning, twas just a means to count something out..   it later changed to beggar in our neck of the woods.. thankfully

JEREMY CLARKSON'S STATEMENT:

'Ordinarily I don't respond to newspaper allegations, but on this occasion I feel I must make an exception.

'A couple of years ago I recorded an item for Top Gear, in which I quoted the rhyme Eeny, Meeny, Miny Moe.

'Now, of course, I was well aware that in the best known version of this rhyme, there is a racist expression that I was extremely keen to avoid.

'The full rushes show that I did three takes.

'In two I mumbled where the offensive word would normally occur and in the third, I replaced it all together with the word "teacher".

'Now when I viewed this footage, several weeks later, I realised that in one of the mumbled versions, if you listen very carefully with the sound turned right up, it did appear that I'd actually used the word I was trying to obscure.

'I was mortified by this, horrified, it is a word I loath.

'And I did everything in my power to make sure that that version did not appear in the programme that was transmitted.

'In fact, I have here the note I sent at the time to the production office.

'And it says, "I didn't use the n-word here but I've just listened through my headphones and it sounds like I did. Is there another take that we could use?"

'Please be assured I did everything in my power to not use that word.

'And as I'm sitting here begging your forgiveness for that fact that obviously my efforts weren't quite good enough.

'Thank you.'

We had that one in the NE too, but we also learned the original in the playground and thought nothing of it, I think it died a natural death and by the time my daughter was small it had changed to bunny ( although they don't really have toes)

Jeremy Clarkson doesn't know how to stop his runaway mouth because that is what's in his head. If he was decent, he would not let himself down as consistently as he has done over the years. The only reason he is still on Top Gear is that he provides the BBC with money. If he wasn't on it anymore, I would not miss him. I'm more upset with James May. I thought he was better than to be an apologist for Clarkson.

Totally agree with you..

There's a reason some words finally die out... all this reclaiming of words is a load of bollocks. .leave them where they belong, dead and buried and only mentioned in a historical sense as part of educating people about why they are no longer part of the current language ..

What an arrogant barsteward. If he thinks he's a hopeless case, why not just hand over to somebody less offensive and boogey off.
