Her face ballooned up and she apparently suffered an allergic reaction to an unidentified substance.
Sam has been monitored since the emergency and yesterday doctors decided to act after her condition worsened.
The reality babe continued to complain of feeling sick and exhausted. It is now thought she has been laid low by a virus which she has not been able to shake off with antibiotics.
Now there are worries over whether Sam will make it through the final few days of the series until Wednesday’s grand final.
A source said: “The poor girl. Going on Celebrity Big Brother was like a dream come true for her but the whole experience has been a nightmare because of illness.
“There are still five days to go to the final. Questions are being asked over whether she should maybe leave on health grounds.”
Sam, 24, was hit by sickness not long after she entered the house with TV viewers being kept in the dark. The first anyone knew about her flagging health was when evicted housemate Liz Jones, 55, spilled the beans about her illness.
The journalist, who was kicked out on Wednesday, said it was unfair for fans to brand the Essex beauty “boring’’ and “dull’’.
Liz said: “Sam is suffering in there. She has been accused of being quiet and not doing anything but there is a reason. She has been ill for more than two weeks.
“I gather none of this has been shown and people don’t know.
“They think she is invisible. Some days she was so bad the producers let her stay in bed because she was really ill.
“She has a virus. It hasn’t helped her time in the house. People have helped Sam when she was sick. Everyone looked after her.
“She fell ill just after going in the house. She said she had done so much up until Christmas that it seems it all came out when she finally relaxed in the house.”
Last night her sister Billie, 23, said: “Sam hasn’t been her usual self. It’s so difficult when you can’t get access to her and you can’t be with her to make sure she is OK.”
After her check-up earlier in the week, Sam’s condition worsened on Wednesday night and it was decided to take her to hospital yesterday.
The boutique owner left the house in Borehamwood, Herts, early in the morning and was taken to the local hospital to see a consultant before returning at 1pm.
A Channel 5 spokesman said: “While Sam was out of the house she was accompanied at all times by a member of staff who ensured that contact with the outside world remained at a minimum.”
