I think his 'speech' has ruined his chances.

Came across as precious and looking to say how great he was.

He didn't mean that but, it sounded as if he did.

 

Sitting on the fence is his nature - he has an opinion but he won;t enter into conflict and the opinions in the house have almost always led to conflict.

It's painted him as beige - even though he's a genuinely interesting guy.
