I loved Dave Allen as well, his sit down comedy was a scream.. Not any more. I listen to him now (on the Tube) and

Yes me too!  Wonder is it because other comedians copied his act and we've seen it so often, its tired now?

Recently I saw a clip of the late great Dave Allen, and it struck me that Dylan Moran's stand up is more or less an impersonation... mannerisms and all.

Agree on Bill Bailey and Eddie Izzard

Yes I thought that, but he's so cute, I forgive him. Dave Allen was a bit sharper IMHO and I still love him. When I was very young we didn't have a TV and my parents listened to a lot of radio, I always chose an English wavelength and laughed when the audience laughed with no idea what it was about.

Awwww

I remember the first time I got a double entendre type joke - I laughed and laughed and my Dad thought it was hialrious i got it

I watched the same interview and I found Fern Britton laughing at everything very phoney.

I didn't find it funny or him funny.  It all seemed very infantile. Much like the Goons, which I find very childish.  I can see why Ken Dodd would appeal to children at the time, but I wouldn't even say it's as witty or as sophisticated as  children's light hearted comedy programming and films shown now.

That's brilliant, one of the priceless memories.

For me some of his contemporaries were light years ahead in terms of comedy.

Once again we agree EC

Remember that when you see my "I'm going out with my mates thread".

Isn't Doddy quoted as saying if you don't like a joke there'll be another one along immediately after?

I know my parents went to see him 'live' - they never got out of the auditorium until 4 hours later..!  He's well known for his lock-ins.

So I suppose if you like him, he's value for money if nothing else.

If you don't - you're b*ggered

His tickling stick never amused me Sprout.

Nah, it didn't me either Sydlers, but some of the stories he used to come out with were funny

Perhaps away from the TV Diddy Men, he was funny, that's all I saw.

I know I found Bob Monkhouse cheesy until I heard him off telly.

I've heard that too. He had to be practically dragged off the stage at the Palladium once
