Neither. One of my friend's is a practitioner and it's really, really good stuff, but even she would never claim to be a scientist. It does have some scientific method though.

I have a colleague who mentioned to me that he has studied NLP and tries to use the techniques. He is an admirer of Steve Jobs and I believe he uses NLP techniques to try and emulate SJ's successes. I have seen other articles which consider NLP to be a pseudoscience and discredited.
With regard to the science bit, I was referring to the testing of hypothesis and examining the expected outcomes of NLP ideas, which is science.
I don't know anything about Steve Job vis a vis NLP.
But I do know that my friend uses some aspects of experimental psychology in her work, and she has results that are measurable, verifiable and quantitative (that's scientific apparently). She has literally transformed people's lives who were living with unresolved issues, addictions and phobias.
She could be doing something solidly scientific like looking down a microscope all day, or looking up a telescope but human beings are a curious and unpredictable subject.
What constitutes science is a debate that has been raging from, at least, the classical Greeks to now. Karl Popper is my personal favourite in the Philosophy of Science.
This is way above my head *backs out of thread*
There's plenty of reading on the Interweb Moonie if you fancy getting into the subject.

I think I will just stay ignorant thanks EC
I've heard of it, its kind of connected to hypnotherapy and even CBT isn't it. I have a couple of Mp3s if anyone's interested I'll put up the links. Or just google five areas and it'll take you there...
Edit: Oh sorry... think you need to be register with them.
My two mp3s use the words calm control ... seems to work for reducing stress!
Heres a link to a hypnotherapy audio recording which uses the word "relax" as a trigger word at the end.

Its a bit of fun really. There's nice caribbean steel band music and it takes you to your own private tropical island - complete with sound effects of the ocean etc. Its a cheap holiday at least!!

Ooh I might try it one day when my kids are all hyper Even if it's 'hokum' and discredited it's always good to have an open mind.

Exactly Suzy.. I'll try anything once! Its handy at night to help me drift off to sleep.
He's actually a hypnotherapist I saw years ago when I was nervous after a car accident. You got a free tape after his consultation. Its the same recording on the site! Some might find his Belfast accent a bit offputting though... its not the softest accent in the world
Oooooh I'm gonna have a go with that later ............once the builders have gone for the day.
Cheers Rosie

The accent won't put me off I'm dead curious now, well done for resolving the nerves after your accident. I've used my friend's methods to help me stay calm (well semi-hysterical) when one of my kids goes for surgery (and he's been loads). It stops them having to peel me off the floor when he goes under.

Awww Suzy so sorry.... being a Mum in that situation must be horrendous
^^^^^^^
I simply can't imagine. It must be incredibly stressful and emotionally draining. One of my kids managed to break both arms and both legs (ankle) at different times in his youth. I used to find that hard to take ......dreadful seeing your kids suffer.
