I went in to Blockbusters today to greetings of "Closing Down"

I got rather upset (of course I didn't show it cos I'm British) and chatted to the staff for about half an hour.

I love that place.

The staff weren't too hopeful but I've just read,

"At Blockbuster, there were also suggestions that the DVD and computer game rental chain could survive.

Moorfields said there were parties that were interested in parts of the business.

"Our focus will be to secure a future for as much of the business as possible as well as trying to save jobs before Christmas," said Simon Thomas, joint administrator at Moorfields.

Mr Thomas said Blockbuster, which employs 2,000 people across 264 stores, would continue to trade in the meantime."

Yes Saint, I saw the news a few days ago.

I felt the same about HMV (I have never been to a Blockbuster) so was pleased when they came out of administration.

There is nothing better in my opinion than a good old root round in a shop. As much as I am immersed in I.T. and I use online a fair amount, I don't want physical shops to close. That is why I do try and support them by spending my hard earning in them every so often.

I know all the reasons for the closure but still ... its a sad, sad day

I felt like that when my HMV closed. I no longer buy from their site either

This is not progress.

Sadly BlockBusters should have moved with the climate and maybe - just maybe the shops would have survived.

I know, it's sad

You would have thought they could have had a dual presence, on-line and high street. Real shame for you Saint.

Last 5 days remaining

Went to my local and it was heaving - was told it was dead yesterday.

There were piles of DVD's behind the counter and was told someone had just bought the lot - probably to sell on in their own shop.

I spent over an hour soaking up the atmosphere.

A little girl was running around the shop and i pondered how she will never really know the simple joy of renting a video, dropping it off via the drop-off box and forgetting to do just that and getting a fine.

I will go back - our local closes at 5pm on Monday - i will be there

. . . and so i went in today, the last day to find the place almost empty.

Not empty of DVD's but empty completely except a few stands.

Staff were moving the last few stands

But i still managed to buy 3 DVD's and catch a brief chat.

Staff seemed resigned to the closure and the heartless fleecing of the shop, customers and themselves - there was little remincising or nostalgia.

I have good memories but sadly there seems like no going back

The pain will ease over time.

What are you planning to do for your film purchases now?

And so BlockBusters have gone

I drove past a few days ago - shutters down, a sad sight.

I'm on a week long holibob and this would be the time I would go to BlockBusters and enjoy the choices, pondering at the shelves.

Its hard to believe that will never happen again.

Does anyone know of other places that rent DVD's - just so i can use them before they close too.

And then its a choice between BlinkBox, NetFlix or LoveFilms??

Sorry Saint. I either buy mine, go to the cinema or watch them on the tellybox so can't really help you there, but there must be plenty of on-line/postal outlets for you to try.

I was walking through Hillsborough on my way back from the match the other week and I noticed the Blockusters there was an empty shell too.

Thank you EC - pleased to see you share my sorrow.

I know things move on but the shop i used constantly told me that they were making a healthy profit.

I wondered if someone like ASDA would buy them out and place BB in the corner of their own superstores.

In Canada all the PostOffices are in the chemist shops - shame we don;t group share buildings.

Now that would have been a good idea after all they sell music and film already, would have been logical to set-up an in-store operation.
