...  He's now THE Daddy!!!

after a few false starts (silkie hens are seriously bad mothers...   there have been 2 or 3 chicks hatch this year, none had survived the first day) I went into work yesterday morning to discover 11 silkie chicks in their coop!!!

Probably doesn't feel like a time of celebration & congratulation to Buttercup..   we moved the hens & the babies to the greenhouse where it was warmer & safer, so a startled Buttercup spent his first ever night alone in the big coop last night

there are 2 Mrs Buttercups...    his hareem..      we tend to call them 'the really thick one' and 'the not quite as thick one'..    or Muppet 1 & Muppet 2

 Buttercup is a bigamist!

So which one is the mummy, Muppet1 or Muppet2?

both we reckon..   11 chicks   -   that's a big brood for even two hens to handle!

before when they have hatched just the one..    they have fought over the chick...  and ended up killing it

like I said..  not the brightest chickens on the block

Both! Does that mean Buttercup was 'romancing' both wives on the same night?

He's a stud rooster!

After the previous failures, I bet everyone is relieved that these chicks have survived and are doing well?

Yogi..    not even with the biggest stretch of imagination, uber thick rose tinted glasses &  ten Mills & Boon paperbacks shoved up my bum could I ever describe what Buttercup does to his women as 'romancing'

Its all a bit distasteful & rapey really...

in fact...   Muppet 2 (the not so thick one) appeared to have been attempting to disassociate herself from Buttercup for quite a while now...    was why I didn't realise she was actually sitting broodily on eggs..   I thought she was just laying low to keep out of BC's line of fire

and yesssss to the rest of you's...

they really are soooo cute aren't they!

However, must not get too attached yet...     I have learned the hard way...    don't let yourself love them & definitely don't name them until they are way way older than they are now...

11 chicks at the moment....      If 5 or 6 make it we'll be doing well!

No soft lights and mood music then?

Never mind, the end result is 11 gorgeous balls of fluffy feathers.
