As requested Cosmo

Below is a list of what I have bought over the last fortnight. These items are to add to my existing jazz collection. Many of these albums I have not heard in their entirety, but as they are all between ÂĢ3.99 and ÂĢ7.99 (2CD), I decided that it's too good an opportunity to pass up.

I do have a problem when it comes to purchasing music (there must be an equivalent to the AA for me ). I have bought other genres of music too, but only listed the jazz items here.

Charles Mingus

Mingus Ah Um

Miles Davis

Bitches Brew

Miles Ahead

Sorcerer

Filles De Kilimanjaro

In A Silent Way

Some Day My Prince Will Come

On The Corner

Well that's a damn good list you got yourself there, EC

I'm a bit like you in that I buy before I try (where Jazz is concerned).  I figure anything by Mingus, Monk and Davis has got to be heard in its entirety anyway - and probably more than once.

Bill Evans is ok but I'm 50-50 on some of his stuff; perhaps I haven't heard enough.  You'll like Easy Living on 'The Digs' album, and Young and Foolish is good too.  I prefer him in mellow mood.

With Davis I'm not expecting to like everything as I know he has experimented over the years. Some of the albums are in the era I quite like so high hopes there. I have had Tutu for years along with 'Blue' as you would expect. Yes, I like the mellow side.

I also have some John Coltrane albums too.

Did I also mention that I purchased the new Chic box-set (not really jazz, but in the neighbour hood).

I like a lot of the Jazz/R&B crossovers - Inner Shade, Incognito and that type of thing.

What about Ronny Jordan?

Yes, got some Ronny J. Like Incognito and bands like Brand New Heavies. Also like a bit of Courtney Pine.

Have you heard of Emperor's New Clothes? I was really into them back in the British Acid Jazz days!

But there is a more recent band which I am in love with. Big jazz influence but very contemporary. They are called The Cinematic Orchestra.

I've put a couple of tracks below.

The Emperor's New Clothes really get's going as it progresses, love it. It should have you dancing

The second is a C.O. track. See if you like them.

BIB:  Love 'em

Trying to work out the genres within genres gives me a headache!

I must admit I find this genre bracketing a bit confusing at times.

GJ, my boss once said that to me when discussing wine except he said "there are only two types of wine, those you like and those you don't". He was spot on.

Cosmo, I would not worry too much about genres, I tend to clump music into a small number (have you ever looked at the genres and sub genres in electronic music - there are hundreds!). I tend to think of Acid Jazz as Jazz I would dance to in a club or in my home that is more radio friendly for the kids. There are some great bands that came out of Acid Jazz and some that were in existence that were swept up in it and survived. I'm thinking of The James Taylor Quartet. Have you heard his Starsky & Hutch?

Try a few more Cinematic Orchestra tracks out, they really grow on you. I would say they are Jazz&Soundtrack. There are some vocal numbers too.

Amythist, I also have some of those. I would say that as a lineup I tend to favour drums, bass, piano and (brass) mainly trumpet. That setup I think is nice and versatile.

How did your music listening go today Cosmo?

Sporadically!

I was out and about, in and out of the car, EC.

Ayers & Incognito (as expected), Inner Shade, Frankie Beverly, Johnny Watson, Dapp Kings, Jazzanova, Four80East, Sound Stylistics.... and that's about all I can remember.

More Jazz/Soul/Funk than Jazz

Have you managed to listen to all your recent purchases now?

Not even dented them Cosmo!

Been a bit too busy over the weekend I'm afraid.

Aww, that's a pity.  Still, they're not going anywhere so I'm sure you'd rather take time and listen to them properly when you get the chance.

I'm hoping for a wet Sunday afternoon, French doors wide open and a cool drink in one hand as the various jazz masters ply their trade for my enjoyment.
