Really, Mrs H?   I'm not sure I could tell the difference.  i only wash them as I'm about to eat them if that makes a difference.   I'm just thinking.. they've been on the ground... and that slug might have left a trail on the one beside it...

In this case it would have been a good idea - it might have removed the slug she'd just found on the strawberries garnishing her plate of banofee pie

I'm a bit shocked at the chef's line there: sound's like he's half-heard something in the past. You have to be careful about washing strawberries as they tend to "soak up" water, but you should still do it for the reason your niece discovered...

The problem is that although strawberries soak up water, they also soak up nasties like pesticides too. Also overdoing the washing can affect the flavour. Best thing is probably to rinse them in a colander...

if I wash them I have to pat them dry  cant be doing with wet straws

I used to pick  when I was at school/college  and nothing tasted nicer than a freshly picked closely examined for slugs etc straw plugged off the plant and popped in my mouth - there wasnt so many chemicals etc around those days

I used to do that too Mrs H - but I've got a bit more OCDish as I've got older.   I examine them, put them in a colander, rinse then dry them - and I keep them in fridge but bring them to room temp before I eat them.

a bit OT here

I dont know whether it is OCD Kaffs or we are more careful now because of all the refinements of growing - I live attached to a Farm and the procedures have changed so much - too much spraying these days for my liking TBH

MrH bought some local new pots in the other day - I was really looking forward to them - freshly picked that morning and in the pot for dinner - they were actually disgusting - even the dog spat them out of his bowl

Speaking of which, anyway for me to post a video on here? Know any good hosting sites?

Sorry EC, I'm useless at stuff like that.

SsssOK. I have found one.

The only thing I don't wash is my nuts.

Do you toast them gently?...they taste so much better that way

Roasting over an open fire, usually

I don't.

I wipe them - same as you do with mushrooms.

you'd get the slugs off, though - right?

Yeah, cos they taste nothing like whelks or escargot.

Just a damp piece of kitchen roll, Kaff; I was told never to wash them (ditto mushrooms) - they hold water too easily.

Morning Fresh kind of girl, eh?

The kitchen roll that I use is pretty damp - they do need drying afterwards.

I don't immerse or put them under a running tap.

The slug trails make a nice meringue.

That's also why you should never drink straight from a bottle when you're in a pub or bar.  You never know what's down in those cellars (and not all managers clean their bottles before displaying them in the coolers).

Apart from that, wotcha Stonkadoodle!
