When I was a kid:

 

Sugar sandwiches (loved those)

ketchup sandwiches

brown sauce sandwiches

mayo sandwiches

 

we were poor, when there was no cheese or ham for sandwiches we tried anything lying around in the cupboards!

all of the above and my all time fave - cream cheese, banana and peanut butter together in a really crispy baguettte - mmmmmmmm - heaven.

When you say "we were poor" that is exactly where Barry Gibb was coming from. We had the sugar sandwiches as kids I think cos it was cheaper than going out for sweets. Although my Dad grew fruit and veg and we used to dip rhubarb into sugar and eat it that way.

Considering I've got such a sweet tooth, i wasn't a fan of the sugar sandwich, although we did have them (and the rhubarb with a wee bag of sugar to dip.

 

I can't think of anything 'odd' I've had on a sarnie.. but (again being poor) if we were hungry and there was a pan of stew for dinner we might be allowed a 'piece on dip'    'piece' being Scottish for sandwich and dip being literally a dip in the stew.  You weren't allowed any meat - just to lay the bread on top of the (cold) stew to soak up some 'dip'    Scrummy.

I don't really have any weird or interesing fillings - although i have been known to dunk a cheese and marmute sarnie in my coffee mmmmm

The closest I can think of to dunking strange things is my colleague used to dip his hot buttered toast into his morning tea/coffee. But the above sounds a b it yukkie to me.

When I thought it was hot stew I thought - that sounds quite nice actually. But cold has me rethinking 

I've had all of those too Ells In fact I still enjoy a sugar sandwich.... or I would if I wasn't trying to diet!

Marinaded octopus with Ben and Jerrys Fish Food is one I'd like to forget.

in addition to sugar sandwiches, I used to eat sugar and beetroot sandwiches and.... and.... sausage and marmalade sandwiches 

My mum used to eat dripping sandwiches  (meat juices from the Sunday roast) 

Ooooo yes...... yummy..... or on toast

Ewwwwwww no - that's my mums fave - she used to try and get me to eat it eeeugh.

 

Amother one I can't stand is jam sandwich - sweet stuff on bread and butter just seems wrong ....although I did used to have a sugar sandwich once in a while as a kid.

Oh yes!  And with plenty of salt on the top.

 

Winkle sandwiches. Only on a Sunday though.

It was always my job on a Sunday to pick the Winkles.

Apparently m'dear wife used to have nestles tinned milk in bread, but her biggest faux pas, when in the Nederlands ca. 1978, admitting that she liked Herring. She ended up with a raw herring and onion preparation. I had warned her.

Aren't raw /pickled herring Rollmops? ...........I simply adore a Rollmop.

Mrs Jer was expecting rollmops or some sorta pickled sea filth. But it was turtelly raw.
