The British royals ran up a bill to taxpayers four times that of their Danish and Swedish counterparts and almost six times that of the ruling families in Spain and Luxembourg.

Critics said the official figures for the Queen and her family gave only a fraction of the real cost of the British monarchy."

I hardly ever see Andrew or Edward - when was the last time we actually 'saw' Anne??

I'd make them work for their privileges.

"Hard working families", "strivers", "people who want to do the right thing", "aspirational families", "hard working striving, aspirational middle income hard working families", "core values", "people who want to get on", "enterprise culture", "freeing small and medium sized businesses" "hard working, enterprising families with aspiration"

Surely that's it covered?

Dont the Royals cost the tax payer 6p a year, or something like that.?

Not bad value I say,I'd rather take us out of Europe, which is truly costing this country far more, and is a waste of space.

Exactly!

I don't hear any of the other North Europe democracies complaining about Royal families, and successful Germany has half of dozen or so. As for Europe, with our inability to share and take part, it was probably never a good idea. In general we have such a selfish, grasping sort of attitude. However rather than having a referendum on Europe, why don't we have a general election and get this lot kicked out.

Yes we should.  We'll never get rid of the trappings of wealth and the influence it has, but getting rid of the royals gives the country back to its people.

We are selfish?  dont we hand over millions of pounds every year to them and get nothing in return, other than the usual insults from Germany and France.?

Their position, status and wealth was gained by invasion.  The Crown Estate originally financed the civil service, government and forces.  The monarch of the day (can't recall) did a one sided deal with the state because the monarchy was facing bankruptcy and the loss of Crown Estate.  Royalty got to keep all their estate and the tax payer financed the civil service, gov't and forces.  Profits were taken by the state from the Crown Estate - and still is.  This is the best bit, in return, the monarch receives money from the Civil List.

It's like someone owing you £100 rent, then giving you £20 and you then graciously thanking them for splendid generosity of the £20, with a gift of a fiver!

You will never swing me around to supporting the monarchy GJ.  It goes against the grain!

According to UKIP, the Tories and the rich man's press, 'we get nothing in return'.  I think we're pretty adept at insulting France and Germany, to be fair!

No sir? We get lots of Euromoney round here. In the unlikely event of us leaving I can assure you that the money saved would not end up in my arse pocket nor years. Furthermore the French and Germans only insult us in the made up world of the Daily Mail hack.

The way those countries treat us they deserve some stick, I just wish for us to stay a free country and not be ruled by those we never elected from outside this country.

Telling us how to run our own business, EU regulations that are passed down to us to follow that other EU "member states" never obey themselves, we are treated as the dustbin of Europe.

Do have any evidence of member states flaunting the EU regulations, that we are bound by?,I mean evidence in fact rather that what you've heard and think?

I understand that sentiment but it's melodrama really.

We have our own government, electoral system, army, Commonwealth, most of the laws that really rule our lives are British, parliament, monarchy, budget, economic policy, treasury, currency, language.  Just about everything that really matters in our lives is controlled in this country. We were even allowed to start an illegal war with George W Bush!

The right's stereotype of a Stalinist centralised Euro dictatorship, doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

One of many examples I could give you, when the French were banning Britsh beef illegally, France escaped the threat of huge fines from the European Commission even tho they were openly ignoring EU rules.

The EU wants a European army, flag, Anthem and parliament and of course the dying swan that is The Euro, they want us all in Europe to be tied together like we are one country, thats harldy right wing media talking, thats obvious fact.

Yes but  the French lifted the ban when they realised they would have a to pay a hefty fine , imposed by the very same EU' if they didn't.

That was nice of them to lift the ban that never should have been installed in the first place lol, but tghe fact remains the EU weren't going to punish them, one rule for them and so on.

6p per year ..I dont think so .

On 1 April 2012 the arrangements for the funding of The Queen’s Official Duties changed. The new system of funding, referred to as the ‘Sovereign Grant’, replaces the Civil List and the three Grants-in-Aid (for Royal Travel, Communications and Information, and the Maintenance of the Royal Palaces) with a single, consolidated annual grant.

The Sovereign Grant is designed to be a more permanent arrangement than the old Civil List system, which was reign-specific. Funding for the Sovereign Grant comes from a percentage of the profits of the Crown Estate revenue (initially set at 15%). The grant will be reviewed every five years by the Royal Trustees (the Prime Minister, the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Keeper of the Privy Purse), and annual financial accounts will continue to be prepared and published by the Keeper of the Privy Purse.

The new system provides for the Royal Household to be subject to the same audit scrutiny as other government expenditure, via the National Audit Office and the Public Accounts Committee.
