One of the great pioneers of stop motion animation.

RIP Ray

The film which sparked his interest in that type of animation was the original King Kong (1933) which was created by Willis O'Brien.

When he was still a teenager he started work on a film called Evolution, making it in his parents' shed. He never finished it as there wasn't the time and he joined the army during WW2. Only 4 minutes of Evolution was made but I found it on Youtube:

It is silent. It is influenced by King Kong and another Willis O'Brien film called The Lost World (from the book by Conan Doyle).

Harryhausen was one of the great cinematic originals, and his death is a great loss.

The best tribute I can think of is that  when "The Mummy Returns" was released with some dodgy special effects to turn Dwayne Johnson into the Scorpion King, Empire magazine claimed that Ray Harryhausen could have done better with a lump of Play-Doh!
