Renton, when I did my degree, which was based around childhood and society we were warned about internet searches delivering dubious results, and told to go straight to the IT department and report anything we might have inadvertently clicked on.  In the three years I was at Uni, I never once happened up on anything that was 'child porn' related.

Unless of course you count my research in to the origins of the 'Little Red Riding Hood' story.

Have messaged El Rolo

I've replied to you. I will delete the thread for you tomorrow if you still wish to but I think your thread is important. I support you in creating it. The subject of child porn should make people uncomfortable and I don't really want to delete this thread.

El Loro

In all honesty, disregarding my research for my degree, I have never happened upon a child porn website.

To be honest, I would be surprised if anyone did just 'happen' upon one, surely because of the 'policing' of the internet of this sort of thing people looking for that sort of thing are hardly going to put in a search for 'where can I find **the thread title**'

Well i don't want to upset anyone or make them feel uncomfortable.

The thread was more about statistics and whether they are accurate. Or if once again subjects are overblown to gain a headline.

It seems from the responses that it hard to beleive soooo many people can simply 'happened' upon it.

Totally agree sky. It's a horrible subject, but it happens.

Agree very much with both of you. It's not as if anyone is going to be allowed to post any links to such sites and it is a subject that exists and should be up for discussion as the Saville thread was.

I guess the statistic must derive from responses from people who google porn. It would be easy to accidentally 'stumble' on child porn in that context.

Honestly officer, I never dun it.  I was just looking for research to see how easy it was.  Yours Pete Townsend

A case of the headline misreporting the facts of the poll and the poll reporting a 'double answer' :

4% of men – the equivalent of one million men, and 2% of women, the equivalent of 500,000, report actually having come into contact with it, or have stumbled across it. Full report here.

So, what proportion of those actually 'stumbled' across it and what proportion otherwise came into contact, (by looking for and at it, for example!)? I suspect v few 'stumbled' and probably most of those who claimed to have 'stumbled' are lying!

What worries me most about this poll is not that people don't know how to report it to the IWF, (let's face it anyone and everyone knows how to contact the police,) rather that, of the 2,058 people polled that 17% were apparently not concerned about it! This is not 'child porn,' it's images of children being sexually abused and 350 of those polled were not concerned about that
