If it's still frozen, then all will be fine.

No need to chuck anything out.

Being a chest freezer you will not need to turf everything as the cold air will not be able to escape from it, in the main and as long as it was still switched on its motor will have been working overtime to try and keep it at it's normal temperature..

 

Depending on how full it was and how much open the lid was there is a small possibility that a few items might be a bit soft. However, your post suggests that it was effectively closed but not 100% because of what was caught in it. This suggests to me that apart from a bit of extra ice forming no damage has been done.

 

Also if it has formed extra ice, this in itself suggests a fair degree of coldness was still milling around.

 I really need to move the freezer, it's happened before but only for an hour or so.

It'll be ok Ells as I've done that and lived. My freezer has a wobbly lid and sometimes leaves a big gap if not pressed down... often don't realise until hours later.

Apparently microwaving at high temp helps kill bacteria.

Try pouring a boiled kettle into it - should take a few mins then sponge up the melt water?

My chest freezer was once left fully open overnight and everything was still fully frozen - probably used the equivalent of a week's electricity though!

Dou you have a large sheet or something similar and your ice scraper?

 

Spread the sheet over thetop of the freezer after opening it fully. Leave it for about 20 minutes then using your scraper you should be able to chip the ice of the lid. the ice then collects on the sheet which you then fold up and remove. Close the lid again and you are back in business without having had to do a full defrost....unless the rest of the freezer is needing a defrost anyway.

Oh no thank goodness you noticed before everything defrosted! The above advice sounds good, I think it'll be just fine. I'll take the frozen pizza though of you're giving away food

My daughter was a pain in the back side when she was little for leaving the freezer door open after going in there for ice cream  I asked her the other day to switch the dryer off and she switched the freezer off  good job I noticed

As peeps have said  ^^^ - if it's still solid it's OK - if it's soft - cook it and then refreeze (if it's raw in the first place).

 

I find my steam wallpaper stripper good for defrosting - I take the plate off and jiggle the pipe all around.

It's probably all her fault that you don't have much joy in the white goods department 

 

Speaking of which - my drier was broken at the same time as yours - my sons friend sent off for the part and fixed it but it seems to have gone again

It was the man's fault in the first place!!!
