Hi peeps need some advice, my daughter wants a blackberry for her birthday in the summer and I'm thinking about getting her one, my only stumbling block is BBM, am i right in thinking anyone on a blackberry can msg/'see' her? Are there parental controls? whereby i can 'hide' her (like bluetooth?) Or is it similar to Imessaging?

As i'm an Iphone user and haven't tried any other smart phones i'm reluctant to her using something i am not very knowledgeable about, so any help would be greatly appreciated before i go trawling the net reading up on it all (oh the joy!)

If it were me I would choose a phone you already know. That we you stand a better chance of not only making sure she is using it in a way you think best, but you can also help her get into using it quicker.

I am currently working on mobile phones at work, the Blackberry in all honesty is not popular amongst my customers, they have to use one for their work, but have a different phone for personal use.

I would go iPhone (get an entry level one to reduce costs - unless I'm being presumptuous and you are quite well off).

Let us know what your decision is Jen.

Edit: Blackberry/RIM is a company in a bit of trouble at the moment.

I'm on GG too, the same plan - 250 mins, 1GB data and unlimited texts for ÂĢ10. Although I only use about 10 mins each month!!

I may have to move from GG soon even though it has been very good because I have heard O2 is going to be bought by SKY/Rupert Murdoch, and I won't put cash into his empire I'm afraid.

The iPhone is to face its biggest challenge  for supremacy in the smartphone market this week with the launch of the new  Samsung Galaxy.

In what has been described as the most  eagerly awaiting technology release of the year, the Galaxy S4 will be unveiled  in New York on Wednesday and rumours are the device will feature eye  control.

The S4’s predecessor, the S3, already had a  feature called Smart Stay that detected if users were looking at the  screen.

But the S4 is expected to have  revolutionary  functions such as ‘eye pause’ and ‘eye scroll’, which will let users scroll  around apps and websites simply by moving their eyes.

Since its launch last year, the S3 briefly  outsold the iPhone 4S but after  the release of the iPhone 5, Apple have  regained the top spot.

However, the S4 is predicted to  become the  biggest seller when it hits the stores in a few weeks thanks  to rumoured  technological improvements such as wireless charging,

It is also expected to be powered by an eight  core processing chip,  compared to the iPhone’s two, and to have a larger screen - 5in compared to 4.8in on the S3.

There was fierce competition between Apple's iPhone 4s, left, and Samsung's Galaxy S III, right as the battle between the two technology companies continues

I currently own the Samsung Galaxy S3 and have done so since shortly after release. It's my first ever mobile that I bought and paid for. As a smart phone I have enjoyed it and found the Internet usage great having a larger screen.

However all those "revolutionary features" have not been used. I've taken a few snaps and downloaded the odd application (all freebies), but by and large I have used the text facility the most.

I read the text you included Erin and had to laugh at a couple of the sentence they used.

"The iPhone is to face its biggest challenge  for supremacy in the smartphone market this week with the launch of the new  Samsung Galaxy."

Because they are all out of synchronisation with their respective release times, they are all playing catchup to a certain degree. The recent release by Google and Sony are pretty well received. The Google Nexus 4 being a very good smart phone and really cheap at just over ÂĢ200. The LG Optimus I understand is good too. Also look at the HTC One, a great looking phone with an aluminium uni-body. Apple will be releasing their next iteration of the iPhone in around September.

"Other leaks suggest it will have a 13  megapixel camera, as opposed to the iPhone’s eight." Although the megapixel count has some effect by a long way the CCD and lens make the biggest impact on image quality. Compare images taken with a real camera with a good lens and CCD at a lower pixel count than a phone and you will still get better images. Phones are great for quick snaps and as image notepads and probably for many people the results will be ok for them.

"functions such as ‘eye pause’ and ‘eye scroll’" My current phone has some form of eye monitoring, but as I say never used it. I do wonder how many people actually use these types of functions.

As an S3 owner, I will be interested to see how much of an advance they make over my current model.  Being in the strong position of buying my phone outright, I could if I wished sell and upgrade, but I probably will not, after all I have not had it a year yet!!

I have a blackberry, Jen and you have a bbm code. You have to give your code to people then they add you to bbk or vice versa - then you have to accept them. You can have other blackberry users as contacts on your phone (to call & text) without having them as a bbm contact.

I actually think I have B's sister as a bbm contact, and I don't have her actual phone number

Info on the New S4 - You need to read bottom up !!

  • That’s the end of the show!
  • S Health – calorie counter, heart-rate monitor, and blood pressure/sugar monitoring with extra dongles.
  • When reading, you can tilt screen up and down to scroll.
  • Now the much-trailed eye-tracking. Avert your gaze while video is playing and the movie is paused.
  • Can answer a call by waving your hand over the phone.
  • Dual video-call: caller can see you and your friends at the same time. This has got grandparents at Christmas written all over it.
  • World’s most annoying phone feature – Group Play. Play same song simultaneously on different handsets. For the mother love of God, why?
  • Samsung Knox – stolen BlackBerry’s idea for ring-fenced work and personal spaces on the phone.
  • Samsung Hub – a store for video, music and other digital content. Google: that’s your lunch money being stolen by your biggest manufacturer.
  • S Voice Drive – turns the phone into a driving mode, transcribing spoken messages into texts, and offering other voice controls. Satnav pre-installed on device.
  • This presentation is cheesier than Cheddar Gorgeâ€Ķ
  • Story Album – way to automatically collate photos from the same day, event or trip.
  • Adapt Display adjusts screen brightness and contrast depending on what app’s being used and the ambient surroundings.
  • S-Translator feature allows you to say phrases and have them translated into a different language. Nice touch for tourists. Supports text-to-speech, and speech-to-text. Knows nine languages, including Chinese, Japanese, French, German and, of course, English. Doesn’t need a network connection.
  • Camera can snap 100 frames in 4 seconds, and lets you pick best snap from burst.
  • “Sound -in-shot” feature allows you to record a short sound clip to accompany photos. “Hi Grandma, get well soon,” and such like.
  • Dual-camera video recording. Shoot yourself in-screen with the front-facing camera while you shoot subjects with the rear-facing camera. Seems a bit, well, weird.
  • 2GB RAM, 16GB/32GB/64GB storage, microSD card slot for up to 64GB more.
  • Rear camera 13-megapixel, front 2-megapixel.
  • 4G LTE (offering 100Mbits/sec downloads, and 50Mbits/sec uploads on supporting networks). 802.11abgn Wi-Fi. Bluetooth 4. Infrared LED to turn the phone into a remote control.
  • 5in screen, Full HD Super AMOLED, 441 ppi. “Kyrptonite” polycarbonate case – that’s plastic to you and me.
  • Shin takes two models (black and white) of the new Galaxy S4 out of a box on stage: the leaked photos were bang on. It’s a slimmer version of the S3. Available in 29 countries from the end of April.
  • Samsung’s president JK Shin is on the stage, giving us the corporate slogans. Now starting to talk features – cameras that record sound with photos (isn’t that video?) and smartphones that know when you want to scroll the screen.
  • Show’s started. Fetch the popcorn. They’ve got a whole orchestra on stage. Bizarre.
  • Samsung are running a little late – “show will start in a few minutes”.
  • Audience is being told to take their seats.

It is a good idea to stick with something you know. The iPhone is due for a refresh in September or there abouts. You may be able to find some good deals on the outgoing models once the new one is announced.

I keep my eye on the website below.

Think it's going to be an Iphone 3gs EC.... like mine She really wanted the BBM facility as all her friends are using it to each other atm but i've been reading that there is a BBM app in the making for iphonme and android so it's a no brainer..... she's only gonna be 11 so i think that an older one (on sim only GG) will be fine for a couple of years (hope i dont eat my words!)
