Ayers founded Soft Machine and played early gigs with Syd Barrett's band Pink Floyd in the Sixties, paving the way for a wave of psychedelic pop music. Soft Machine's self-titled debut album is considered a psychedelic classic, and music critic Nick Kent said that Ayers and Barrett "were the two most important people in British Pop music. Everything that came after came from them."

 

I have to admit I did not know him, probably because the band is just a bit before my time. But I do know the names in the extract below. Some good names in there so I'm presuming he must have been a talent himself.

Hell' Bells Carport! I remember Soft Machine too! My older bruvver had their albums! Honest!  

 

We are clearly of a generation.  

 

Clearly I need to fire up Spotify, YouTube and Grooveshark so that I can sample Soft Machine. I feel I may be missing something.

Yep! The Softs are an acquired taste. Elsewhere do you have any experience of the Magma album, Mekanik Destructiv Kommandoh? Those were the days!

Nope. That I don't. By who and when? Like I said, Soft Machine really was my bruv's band of the day. 

A French (ish) band led by Christian Vander. It was different.

Ta. I'll take a look for it although with a band name like that the search may not end up prettily!

Either way you can see why someone such as I might find the Brits, and the X Factor less than delightful.
