Ah, right: no, that scene was part of a small sub-plot and an example of the sort of "Ripper legacy" I was referring to.

A young woman had been murdered, cut up, stuffed into bags and thrown into the Thames. When the bags were found, some police started to panic that "Jack" was back. Reid however conducted experiments to prove that the bags had been dumped much further away in a different part of London.
