How Rylangate has destroyed Big Brother

As Celebrity Big Brother 2013 fans react to the news that Rylan Clark has  been leaving the house regularly for X Factor tour rehearsals, we explain why  it’s another nail in the show’s coffin.

Oh dear. Who knew that it would be Kathy Beale that sparked the signature  furore of this series of Big Brother?

This morning the lovely Gillian Taylforth unwittingly  ignited the one of the biggest controversies in the show’s history by  revealing that Rylan Clark has been regularly let out of the most famous house  in Britain so he could honour his commitments to the talent contest

Speaking on Channel 5â€ēs long-running morning talkshow The Wright  Stuff, she told of how he asked his ‘driver’ the time and relayed that  information to the group, and later informed their ‘Mic Man’ Eric Johnson that the Essex lad  routinely left every Sunday.

Just hours later, a spokesperson confirmed  the news, but insisted that he hadn’t left the Elstree Studios site in  Hertfordshire, and that he’d been accompanied by a member of staff.

Since Big Brother moved to Channel 5, it’s just about held up against the  numerous criticisms that have emerged – the lack of live feed, the alleged  nominations tampering, and the fact that Conor McIntyre was able to leave last  year’s normal series ÂĢ50,000 richer despite his threats of physical and sexual  abuse towards Deana Uppal.

But now, any shred of credibility left in the Big Brother format in the UK  has been destroyed, and here we explain the three main reasons why.

The ‘no contact with the outside world’ rule is now null and void

The single most crucial point of the Big Brother format – even more so than  live feed – is that housemates are isolated in the house and filmed 24 hours a  day, with no ways of contacting the outside world.

This should be sacrosanct. Not even the catch-all excuse ‘Big Brother  reserves the right to change the rules at any time’ can justify changes to  it.

Nonetheless, they’re rules that have been stretched to breaking point over  the years. Housemates have left for tasks, housemates have left to do the  shopping. The house has even been opened up for a celebrity red carpet film  premiere.

But at least those instances had always been on Big Brother’s terms. Until  now, trips out the house have never been dictated by a housemate, contractual  obligations or not. And no, this isn’t just because it’s Rylan – anyone could be  in his shoes and it’d still be a problem.

Now that this line has been crossed, Big Brother is no longer Big Brother. If  contestants are going to be allowed out to work, why lock them up at all?

Z-list celebrities are now regarded as bigger than the show

Over the years, producers have made a number of concessions to get  celebrities in the house – to name two, private bedrooms and the ability for  pairs to be counted as one housemate.

Otherwise, even the biggest names – Vinnie Jones, Verne Troyer, Jermaine and  La Toya Jackson – have had to take part in accordance with Big Brother’s rule  book.

But never before has one of these concessions compromised the Big Brother  format. And this is for X Factor reject Rylan Clark – who doesn’t even regard  himself as a celebrity.

Was he really that essential to the success of this series that producers had  to get him in at any cost? We’d be willing to wager that there are other stars  out there just as entertaining as Rylan whose presence in the house would not  have made a mockery of the show.

This sets a worrying precedent for the future – if some bloke off a talent  show who’ll most likely be forgotten in five months time can secure such a  significant privilege, what will the next batch of nobodies be able to get away  with?

We can’t trust the producers at all any more

By far the worst thing about this debacle is that producers have covered it  all up. Viewers have been spending their hard-earned money voting to save Rylan  while under the misleading impression that he’s been living in the house 24  hours a day.

If chiefs had been honest and even just briefly mentioned Rylan’s absences on  the programme, any defence they mounted would have been a little more credible.  But the fact that they haven’t come clean until today leaves them without a leg  to stand on.

This isn’t a housemate leaving for medical treatment or to learn of the sad  death of a loved one. This is the most significant breach of the Big Brother  format to date.

Spin-off show Bit On The Side has promised to address the issue tonight in  what will no doubt be an attempt to gloss it over before they pretend it never  happened. But faith in Big Brother is at an all time low and it’s going to take  a major shift in attitude among the top brass to restore it.

My two penneth for what it's worth

For me, him leaving the house is an advantage of sorts in that he gets out of the pressure of the house for however many hours it is, irrespective of whether it's on the compound or not.  That goes against everything BB used to stand for but then C5 have changed the rules to suit themselves.

I don't blame Rylan for this, I blame BB. I'm not sure if for Rylan this was a condition of him joining the show - I care not.  I do however, imo, think that he should have committed to one or the other, but not to both shows.

When BB agreed to this, they could have set up one of the task rooms surely so that he didn't have to leave the house, although I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that they'd insist the acoustics aren't right

Lastly, no matter how much rehearsal that guy has - he can't sing for toffee

I agree with all of that (even as a Rylan supporter) but I don't blame him for taking the offer that was made

Kaffs

I agree Pengy... I don't like Rylan but it's C5's fault, as everything else  that wrong with the show has been IMO. The produce the show, and even if people don't believe it's totally scripted , by removing LF they totally control what we see. Therefore they can edit it to produce any result they want, as was proved by how skewed the HL show C4 sometimes was; bearing little reality to what we had seen on LF during the day! The sad thing is that people fall for it, and will have been voting in droves after latest manipulation....

Baz

So if Rylan was out of the house having rehearsals, why was he so *stressed* in there? That boy is the biggest faker on  the show, which, IMHO has been rubbish from the start. C5 need to realise that BB audiences don't want TOWIE or any of those shows, we want what it was when C4 ran it( although they began to make a dogs ear of it too)

i don't think any celeb would turn it down if they got to dictate terms tbh - I don't think BB should have allowed him on though.

That is true Kaffers, but they should sit and think about which of their *Commitments* will further their *Careers* and which won't. CBB most certainly will not and now, even less so

again I lay that at BBs door - were they really so desperate to have him on the show that they were prepared to agree to this?

stupid question because as he's there they obviously did   all this does is show how desperate BB is.

It wouldn't surprise me if in all this fuss, BB now turn on Rylan and make him more hated than Spiedi

CELEBRITY Big Brother star Rylan Clark has been secretly leaving the house to attend rehearsals for the live X Factor tour.

And now viewers have turned against the favourite for “breaking the rules” of Big Brother.

Producers had managed to keep his regular stints out of the house a secret from the show’s millions of viewers.

But yesterday information about his absences for meetings with a singing coach leaked out.

Ex-housemate Gillian Taylforth, 57, appeared on Channel 5 chat show  The Wright Stuff and was asked if it was frustrating not knowing what time it was in the house.

She said: “Rylan went out to do rehearsals for the tour he’s doing for X Factor, and obviously he wasn’t allowed to talk to anyone, but when he came back he’d ask somebody the time very quickly, like the driver.

“And we said: ‘What’s the time? Quick put it on the oven!’”

Her comments sparked an immediate backlash from angry fans who vented the fury on the internet.

Ex-Big Brother contestant Narinder Kaur, 38, tweeted: “Bang out of order and against the no 1 rule of BB! Rylan NOT to win!! Get him out!”

Camp singer Rylan, 24, is set to perform on the opening night of the X Factor show in Manchester on Saturday, just 24 hours after the grand final of  Big Brother.

He has been allowed out at least twice during the past two weeks.

The decision had been kept from Big Brother fans as there is no longer a live feed for people to watch round-the-clock footage.

The news also raised questions as to whether Rylan could have received information about who the favourites on the show are.

Last night Channel 5 said Rylan had stayed within  Elstree Studios complex, had not seen anything about the show and had been chaperoned.

A spokesman said: “Rylan has been rehearsing for his tour on-site with a choreographer. He has been escort-ed there by a Big Brother producer.”

BOOKIES Ladbrokes lengthened favourite Rylan’s odds from 1-4 to 1-2 yesterday. Ex-Heartbeat actress Tricia Penrose, 42, is now second favourite to win, with her odds coming in to 5-2.

The rehearsals were in Sheffield!! You would need more than a golf cart to get you there.

Call me stoopid but........ I would imagine that Rylan was already contractually obliged to do the X Factor tour before he signed for CBB.

Therefore it suggests to me that XF would have had to agree to Rylan doing CBB. Obviously both production teams have struck a deal.

Ch 5 have mugged Rylan and done him like a kipper.

XF may or may not be very happy with Ch 5 right now (depending on whether XF are going to spin this - who knows how? - into Rylan's favour).

Rylan's the pawn.

Yes exactly. What a load of cod's this show is now. Probably why I hardly watch it. They probably need to vote him out so he can concentrate on little tour.

Enthusiastic Contrafibularities

it would be madness to leave BB on Friday and go straight into X Factor on Saturday without at least some preparation.

I guess I'm on my own in believing the story that he rehearsed in a large room within the compound (surely the task room or basement wouldn't be big enough). I don't believe for one second he was driven to Sheffield - after all the only info he appears to have got from the driver is the time - sounds about right for a short trip on a buggy.

Call me naive but that's what I believe.

I'd believe BB before I'd believe Maloney. If Rylan went to Sheffield that's approx a 5 hour round trip + 2 hours for rehearsal.

I've seen comments that he shouldn't have signed up for CBB, why not? It's up to him to make decisions for what he wants to do, no one else, just as they wouldn't like to be told by a stranger what they should or shouldn't do with their life. And if I'm also being naive I'd rather that than be cynical

There would be nothing stopping him signing up for CBB if thats what he wanted to do, but as with other jobs and commitments, it should have been pointed out to him that they coincicided and it was one or the other. I'm sure other celebs haven't been given that choice in the past.

C5 are to blame for this but Rylan should do the decent thing and bow out. Wether you believe the driver only told him the time, there is still the opportunity there for more discussion to have taken place.

No contact with the outside world should mean just that.

Maybe other celebs didn't have any other work at the time. BB have said a Producer was with him and his job would be to stop Rylan or anyone else talking about outside stuff. If it had been any other hm the same would have applied.

Acceptance is the key word. We don't have any control on what agreements BB makes with anyone else. Those who have a problem with the situation and timing Rylan found himself in should complain to X Factor and BB
