Just wondering...Has anyone ever just sailed through one and managed to get out of the other side without having to get a member of staff to authorise or verify something or other?

Needless to say, I haven't!
Obviously if you've got booze, fair enough, but why oh why is there always a problem with something or other?
Oh and that stuff about putting things in bags, yes i've put everything in the bloody bags, do you really think that I'm going to thieve a bag of bloody rocket @ 99p?
I'm a bit thick really. I fall at the first hurdle with the bag thing - I usually take my own and I know it shouldn't but ............it gets confusing. It's all downhill from there. Fabulous way to embarrass your kids though.
I've never used them and I never will. To me they are just a way of doing people out of jobs. I'd rather stand in a queue at a checkout!
Sainsbury's ones are the worst!!!
I have sailed through without having to interact with a human... I regularly do at Tesco's, and sometimes do at Asda (now I have worked out which the irritable self service tills are, and learned to avoid them)
I love the self serve ones..
Whatever happened to the bar code reader "as you go"
Twas a great idea - swipe as you shop!!!

Its best to take your own bag. Saves supermarkets own bags and waste pollution thereof

Oh Waitrose here have that
If I'm 100% honest here - they frighten me just a bit. It's kind of like a Tourettes thing - I'm constantly thinking 'how easy it would be' to steal something. I am a very honest person and would never dream of stealing but ....................when I have a tiny item - I just can't help but think 'ooooh that'd be easy'
I have never done it but it always crosses my mind. Please tell me I'm not alone.
as i was so disappointed when santa left me a plastic till with only a few buttons, i absolutely love them, i just wish for more "bleeps" and "buttons"

Soozy!
Tesco scanners seem to be ok but yes, sainsburys usually end up with needing assistance.
They drive me nuts, that's how I now always go through checkout via the cashier.
If I hear 'Unexpected item in the baggage area' one more time at Sainsbury's I'll scream
I only use them if I have one or two items - anything more and I queue - hate the bliddy things

That's the very words that makes me
i answer back.
i hear they arrested a woman today as she was going through the checkouts with loads of small items and as she scanned one or two her arms got fatter and fatter, eventually her arms dragging along the floor as she made escape did for her, there was an unseemly scuffle by the disabled toilets, which came as quite a shock to the bloke who'd only gone in there to secrete multi packs or razors and a christmas cake , under his hat.
^^^^
Looks like I'm very much on my own then
I always knew there was a bad girl in me trying to get out

Agrees with Joe.
Perhaps we should REFUSE to use these 'automated' doo-dah's and keep cashiers in their jobs!!!

Yes, I use them all the time a couple of times a day and I would say it's very low the number of times I need assistance. I find them generally better and quicker than the regular tills.

I signed up for it but couldn't be bothered to use it.
As for self-service in general: can't be doing will the chaos and carnage I'd bring to the check out. And besides, there's someone far more better trained in working these fangly things out.
If there's no one waiting to use the self scanners I like my kids do it all for me They love it, they don't realise I'm being lazy and using them as free labour.
