The Social Strata tech people have made a change which should reduce the risk of the recent outages happening again. That's the simple explanation.

 

The more complicated explanation per Brian Lenz is:

"The issue today was amplified by the fact that our DNS records for hoop.la had a low TTL of 5 minutes (necessitated by the recent server migration). As a preventative measure, we have bumped our TTLs up to 24 hours in order to help lessen the impact from this type of issue in the future. If this type of DNS issue were to happen again, sites should remain more available for an extended period of time."
