As for the Mitchell bike scenario. I wonder if it was a simple case of bikeism. Remembering that Guardian survey where the majority thought cyclists were weird, poor, or both unless they spent lots of money on equipment, one can imagine how offended the police, resplendent in their vests and bondage like equipment belts, straps, and belts, might be at the sight of an ordinary bloke, on an ordinary bike.
