Protesters gather at Birmingham Bullring centre

Protest at Bullring Birmingham Police advised Bullring staff to prevent people entering the centre

Police have said they are "monitoring" a protest involving about 100 people in Birmingham city centre.

The protesters began gathering near to the Bullring shopping centre at about 15:00 BST.

A Bullring spokesperson said they had been advised by police to stop people entering the centre but people could leave.

Police said no crimes have been reported and the motive for the protest "remains unclear at this time".

A BBC reporter at the scene said officers had separated the crowd into two groups.

In a statement, West Midlands Police said officers "have no power to ban a static protest".

"In fact the right to protest peacefully is a sign of a healthy democracy and we have a positive duty to facilitate that right."
