Steven Moffat has promised "a fitting end" to the story of Doctor Who companions Amy and Rory.
The pair - played by Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill - will depart the sci-fi drama in forthcoming mid-series finale 'The Angels Take Manhattan'.

"All stories have to end, and painful though that is, the most important thing about a story is how it finished," said Moffat. "I had over a year's warning to get this sorted out, and I'm very proud of what we've done. A fitting end to the mighty era of the Ponds!"
Head writer and showrunner Moffat explained that he had devised the characters' exit while in New York, which influenced the episode's setting.
"There was something about [returning monsters] the Weeping Angels and New York that just seemed to make sense to me," he revealed. "And I thought of the story for this episode while in New York.
"It's always good to find a new form for [the Angels] and we've got little cherubs this time. I had loads of ideas for the Weeping Angels on both the previous stories that I never got anywhere close to using, so it was good to find the opportunity."
Moffat  revealed  that he completely rewrote Amy and Rory's final scenes after completing his first draft.
"I completely changed the ending as I was writing it, thinking 'No, I've got it wrong... I'm on the wrong emphasis' - but it's a good one and it's properly emotional," he insisted.

Mmmm, I kind of drifted off in that Ep. Did not find it engaging. What happened? Was it just a filler EP setting up story lines for future EP's?

Pretty much so EC. The main significant bit was that Rory's dad said he knew that the reason Amy and Rory kept on coming home between adventures with The Doctor was because of him, so he gave them his blessing to go off with The Doctor until they wanted to stop for themselves. All he asked was that the Doctor return them safely,

The Black Box stuff was a mad alien race wanting to eradicate the human 'disease' before they spread through the universe.

The Doctor reversed what the boxes had done and blew up the alien's space ship. The world picked itself up and carried on as usual.

A pretty flat ending to what looked like a quirky but good episode.

Next week's episode is a 'hide behind the couch' one though!

..and me - I loved the first one of the series, but the others, whilst watchable, haven't been as good as that... it's like being in limbo waiting for next week really.

I have been a Dr. Who viewer for many, many years (Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker being my favourites). But have not found much I like about the present Doctor or some of the eps. Normally I would sit on the sofa and watch it through, but tonight I found myself drifting in and out of the room.

The upside to Doctor Who since it's reboot in 2005 is the quality of the production. It does make you think thy could be on another planet and not just a quarry or a disused warehouse.

Just wondered how you felt about whether you need/want the thread as a sticky - a la the poll.

I'd like it to stay....at least until this part of the series is over. 

I don't post in it much, mainly cos I usually watch the episodes a couple of days after they've been shown, but I always pop in to see everyone else's opinions on it.

And I agree....the latest episode was a bit of a let down. It didn't really seem to go anywhere 

Although I have to admit to turning the sound down and closing my eyes a few times cos I got a bit scared.  In my defence I was all alone in the house, it was dark, and I could have sworn I saw a cube or two something move out of the corner of my eye!  

Oh....and there was way too much "eccentric" behaviour from Matt Smith this time round. I like it when he's odd....but it seemed a bit over the top this time.

In summary.... too much over-acting and not enough storyline. 

I think that was all for a reason Ducky, i think he knows something is going to happen to the Ponds so he's being weird around them.

almost time..... but I read an interview with Karen Gillan the other day which (I think) might have spoiled it a bit for me.  I don't think it's going to be what I expect/hope for.

Well. I'm a bit disappointed....I'm not really sure what I wanted/expected, but it didn't measure up.

Yes, I felt that too.

It feels a bit of a cop out that he can't use his Tardis to go collect them. I will remember that when he does it in the future. 

     I was happy with it.   I had a tear in my eye.

'Fraid I was as dry eyed and stony faced as the angels.

Though not quite as frightening....I hope!

I have to say that there is very little that gets me emotional, especially Dr. Who as it is pretty much telegraphed in advance these days.

As I say I felt the scene fairly weak, giving some pretty inconclusive reason as to why they could not jump in the Tardis and change events.

However when I first saw Spock's funeral in STII TWOK it got me. I still get a bit of a lump in the throat even though I know what's coming... even Kirk could not get through his speech. 

The downside for me is the inclusion of the song Amazing Grace, which I have never liked and not sure how it relates to Spock.

"Amazing Grace" is much more iconic in the States than in the UK. It was used for the film simply because it's a well-known tune generally associated with funerals and memorial services.

(And of course it allowed the visual joke of the - *ahem* - "Scottish" member of the crew getting to play the bagpipes...)
