I remember those Velvet, I miss him and still watch re-runs of Morse and ITV2... I'm off to find out the name of the bloody series now

The thing about updating the new Sweeney film is that it misses the point.  The Sweeney series was just a violent cop show and there have been many since but not called "The Sweeney".

Because the Sweeney only ran for four or five years, it's kind of stuck in a time period that, say, "The Bill" isn't.

The Sweeney is a 70s show like "The Avengers" is a 60s show or "Cold Feet" is a 90s show.  Brown flared slacks, mutton chop side burns, Ford Cortinas and the slang of London during the late 70s.  Even two relatively unattractive blokes being successful womanisers is a bit of a feature of 70s TV shows.

The Sweeney without the 70s is pointless to me and it could be any of the many violent Brit films of the last 15 years, with Ray Winstone (who's been in most of them, after all) doing his usual hack job.
