I've never been on one - they look pretty idyllic and I love the idea but like you I think I'd find it a bit claustrophobic. Odd really - I was bought up in a small two up two down but now - I really do love space.

Absolutely!
Would be a lovely way to spend the later years...just pootling along on the British waterways...taking on folk that are going our way...kind of taxi like 
A slow taxi obviously....takes 15 mins by car from the marina to town...takes over 2 hours by boat!
I've never been on one, but I have been on a Dutch barge which is a wider, shorter version of the regular barge, I was up the Thames this last weekend on my friend's boat, which is a small cabin cruiser. I enjoy it for a day or two, but start to miss my home comforts if it's any longer than that!
