I have to say that is a work of art. Extremely well done.
Hat's off to whoever thought up the concept.

Think so!
An opening ceremony.
Jeez...rally the troops.
You do understand it's got FA to do with it I hope.

It was terrific; and like so much of the ceremony (such as getting the "future generation" to light it instead of past Olympians), it completely confounded expectations. Brilliant stuff.

I think for once, the event itself overshadowed the hype and speculation. Mr Boyle did a good job and I think it will be a difficult ask for the next city to top that.
Watching Sky news and they are saying it was like watching a film tonight.Well done Danny Boyle .

I also thought having the construction workers there was a nice touch.
It was brilliant! Loved the idea of the young athletes too and as Carnelian said a nice touch to have the construction workers there.
All in all we can be proud
I thought it was really weird to start with (the opening) i was sitting here thinking 'is that what they want the world to think Britain is like?' but as it all went on i enjoyed it.
LOVED the cauldron! And who lite it too, the pyrotechnics were amazing as well.
Anyone else notice the queen looked asleep at one point?
the cauldron is the best I've seen and I loved that it was future olympians that lit it rather than established stars - nice touch

i thought that was wonderful... really stirred the emotions. I only saw it from when they carried on the Olympic flag and I was choked watching that (and Ali! ) Erin's pictures look amazing - I'll be watching the whole shebang over the course of the weekend
Edit - yep - loved that the construction workers were there too!

I agree, EC and Eugene, there were so many brilliant aspects to it.
I thought the cauldron was fabulous.

I think it may be on iPlayer if you want to watch it again. Not checked but it may be on the HD channel.

I cannot begin to imagine how that could ever be bested. I have seen it several times now and still find it very emotional.
Quite a touching interview by Thomas Heatherwick who designed the cauldron, explaining the concept.
When the cauldron was first lit, I thought, 'oh no they've done a modern art thing and it doesn't look like a proper cauldron'.........then all the petals started moving upwards and I was enchanted by it. Absolutely stunning and captivating ceremony. Near perfect.
I didn't think anything would top the archer lighting the cauldron with a flaming arrow in Sydney, but Friday night topped it for sure. Well done Danny Boyle and all involved.

A true symbol of the creativity which exists in the UK. I think in years to come this cauldron will be held up as an example of the best Olympic cauldron's and lighting of.
