I wouldn't normally bother you lot with my browser problems, but this is starting to bug me:

I use IE8, and over the last couple of days have noticed that a lot of web page "buttons" and suchlike are appearing to be "broken".

As an example, all the "reply" buttons on this forum, along with a few avatars, are now appearing as the notorious red cross. I should stress that I'm seeing this on a number of sites, and most of the avatars here still work.

 

I've had a quick look on Firefox, and that seems fine. I'm guessing it's some sort of IE8 setting and/or security issue, but I don't know where to start - anu ideas?

Yeah: tried that - no improvement.

It even makes page updates worse, and I get a "Your browser is unsupported." message at the top of the page (because I'm now effectively trying to browse with IE7 or whatever), which implies that IE8 is meant to be supported...

Try this to see if it helps:

 

Clear temporary Internet files. To clear temporary Internet files, follow these steps: a. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
b. On the General tab, click Delete under Browsing History
c. Make sure that the Temporary Internet Files is chosen. Also as an option Cookies though make sure you know your passwords to sites before selecting.

d. Click the Delete button - it will take time for the temporary internet files to be deleted.
e. Click OK to close the Internet Options window.

Oh there's an answer to that. El Loro knows it. He posted a link to the solution that came from someone else I think. He might be able to help you out when he's on hopefully

I remember what you are referring to but it won't help E.L. as I had posted saying to clear the unsupported message switch off the compatability view. For this forum the compatability view should not be on. IE users used to need it when this forum was first created but not now.

Yeah - tried that too. Always worth a go, of course, but I'd have been surprised if it made any difference as I have CCleaner installed, and used that regularly anyway.

 

It really does seem to be specific to IE8, and it's affecting sites across the board: I've just noticed a couple of broken buttons/icons on the BBC homepage (although most are unaffected).
