I think there's a metal clip at one end that you have to open before you can get the roller out

Well that's just it; I got so hung up because it didn't, couldn't, wouldn't do the job despite all the promo bumf. After killing 2 (and thinking it was my fault) and getting so irate with the 3rd, I tried out a Henry and it was really good but then someone recommended a Vorwerk. 

I went for the Vorwerk because I prefer an upright (you can have a lean on it during fag breaks)

 

I guess I'll look into them a bit more when the need arises or when I have more money, but at the minute a new vacuum is way down on my list of priorities

Here's a little handy hint for fresh smelling vacuuming.  When you change your vacuum bag, pop a couple of cotton wool balls soaked in zoflora in to the new bag, then every time you vacuum it acts as an air freshener too. (I'm not saying you all have smelly homes, I'm just paranoid about dog odours)

Zoflora is also a marvel for getting baby sick odour out of carpets

What's zoflora? Where would I buy it?

Zoflora is an anti-bacterial disinfectant.  Most supermarkets sell it.

Couldnt agree with you more about Dysons. One of the most stupid things Ive ever done was to pay £200 for a Dyson to save 10p a litre on petrol a few years ago.....since then Ive lugged the heavy thing around, spending hours unclogging it ,putting up with crap suction etc until last week when I dropped it down the stairs and its irretrievably broken.

I went on tesco rewards and discovered Id got a few quid in unclaimed rewards and ordered the cheapest little tesco bagless cyclone which is fab,light portable great suction....and I only paid £20 for it

Amythist what a dreadful shame about your Dyson My first vac was a £20 one from tesco and it was superb! I never should have thought myself clever for then spending £300 on the stupid Dyson I've used it for the last time today, I'm officially on stroke until Henry arrives!

Do NOT buy the Hyacinth scented Zoflora.

It smells like stale wee when it dries
