I know what number 8 is now and for all the brain-busting, what a let-down - never flippin heard of it!!

I looked at a few sites before I posted the Daily Mirror link Katerina, and chose that one 'cos it had some additional clues before the answers, for anyone who wanted another bash at guessing before the 'reveal.' I now realise that the Mirror omitted no.8, presumably because they thought that most UK readers would have never heard of it!

Could be Soops. A lot of the sites I visited didn't have 8 and quite a few didn't have 5 either!

Anyway, I think you have all got them now?  I hadn't a clue about #8 either and had to google to find out.....I still didn't know it when it was revealed. I thought it was popeye and some convicts!

After spending loads of time the last few days staring at the lego and only getting No 1 I caved in just now and clicked the link with the answers I wouldn't have guessed the rest of them I doubt  and I've never heard of 5 and 8 anyway lol.

See to me Popeye is just blue and white. Yes, he sometimes had a red neckerchief, but no yellow top. So it doesn't look anything like Popeye to me.

I must admit that I've been surprised by the number of people in this thread who've never heard of Asterix the Gaul. I don't mean that in a bad way: I just find it interesting re what enters the public consciousness and what doesn't. By contrast, I'm not remotely surprised by the almost universal response of "Who?" regarding number 8...
