RIP Jocky.

By way of tribute, here's another look at one of the "biggest cock-ups in Top of the Pops History":

I remember Billy Connolly commenting on Jocky's interview with the BBC after becoming World Campion: polite and self-effacing, it was like he'd just been invited round to his Grannie's for tea. Truly lovely bloke.

I agree.  i remember when we only had 3 channels and there was always darts, footie or snooker on a Saturday afternoon and a Sunday... There was not much else to watch.

Well said.  Most of my uncles were like him LOL.   I do remember the Jackie Wilson gaffe on TOTP too!

Seemingly it was not a gaffe! Dexy's midnight runners stated they did it deliberately. There ya go...

"When we did a song called Jackie Wilson Said in the early 80s, there was a big beer-swilling darts player around called Jocky Wilson. For a laugh, we told the producer to put a picture of Jocky Wilson up behind us. He said, "But Kevin, people will think we made a mistake." I told him only an idiot would think that. The morning after, the DJ Mike Read said: "Bloody Top of the Pops. How could they mix up one of the great soul singers with a Scottish darts player?"

What's interesting though is that the BBC still "admit" it was a mistake! (The line in my earlier post - "one of the biggest cock-ups in Top of the Pops history" - is a direct quote...)
