I love the old B & W Miss Marple movies with Margaret Rutherford and I also like her in Blithe Spirit, in fact, that would rate as one of my all time favourite films 

 

I liked Bette Davis in Mr Skeffington but tbh I didn't really likes Davis very much   I also like How Green Was my Valley with Maureen O'Hara and Roddy Dowell - depressing but a good film nonetheless 

 

I'm sure there's many more, I just can't think of them.  But I always feel a good B & W film is a must when the weather is crap, you're sat in front of a warm fire munching on tea and toast

I'm not sure about your budget or whatever but I used to buy box sets of everyone from Norman Wisdom to the Marx bros for my mum and dad. Amazon, ebay are all good starting points.

Other really good black and white Hitchcock films not yet mentioned are

Foreign Correspondent and Saboteur. He also made Sabotage which was made before he went to the States. I've never seen that one but it involves a boy getting on to a bus in London without realising that the parcel he is carrying is a bomb. It explodes. I know that this is a spoiler but I think that anyone who does decide to watch it should be warned in advance.

 

 

Twelve Angry Men and It's a Wonderful Life are my favourite films. 

He was also in Goodbye Mr Chips ...........I loved that.

 

I remember a film called The Blue Veil - such a sad film - also A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

 

My fave black and white is called 'The Outsider' with Tony Curtis - a bit depressing but when I was a little girl I loved Tony Curtis.

I fell in love with Tony Curtis when I was about six or seven and my Dad took us to the cinema to see Tarus Bulba .............he was devastatingly handsome in his day.

Rosie. There is an old film on this afternoon in 15 mins. called Conspiracy of hearts. It is on Film 4, if you can't watch it then it will be on Film 4+1.

This is a film I remember watching with my dad who was an old softie, we were blubbing my sisters and I, and he was "Just blowing his nose" in to his hankie.

I love Conspiracy of Hearts Rosie ... I also like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn ... In fact there is nothing like a wet Saturday afternoon , a bar of chocolate and an old black and white weepie... Bliss

Just looked at that trailer, wow he looks so different!

It looks like quite a dark movie. He was good at those darker roles. He was brilliant in "The Sweet Smell of Success" and "The Defiant Ones" too.

Mr woo is an old softie .........my kids used to throw a towel over to him if there was a sad film. Little House on the Prarie, The Waltons or some such stuff on the telly!

 

My daughter is the same - I remember her absolutely breaking her heart over the last episode of Hi De Hi (she was about 5) - Peggy finally got her Yellow coat but the camp closed down. She was devastated

There's another one I have in mind, but I can't think what it was called, I can hardly remember anything about it either. She was an old and bitter spinster aunt,,,,or something like that....I think.

 

My son was the same! He was besotted with Peggy, he is nearly 29 and I still remind him now and then of his first love.

Sounds like Now Voyager. She's a frump who transforms herself into a hottie.

I love Black and White films, agree with above choices. 
One of faves is Random Harvest, along with any Bette Davis films.
We dont see enough of the golden oldies on TV ! 

I'm a Bette Davis fan.There is a film called Old aquaintences, and  her and Miriam Hopkin are in it. Bette Davis hated Miriam Hopkin with a vengance. she use to say, "I got here, where I am through hard work, she(M.H.) got here through opening her legs.
