A 35-year-old man has been arrested after a headless torso feared to be EastEnders actress Gemma McCluskie was dragged from a canal in east London, sources have said.

The limbless body was discovered near to the Broadway Market stretch of Regent's Canal in Hackney at 2.40pm yesterday.

"Police were initially contacted by a member of the public who had noticed something suspicious floating in the water," the Met Police said in a statement.

"The torso was recovered by divers from the Met's Marine Support Unit and additional searches are due to be carried out in the water."

The male suspect remains in custody at an east London police station, detectives said.

Relatives and co-stars of 29-year-old Miss McCluskie were said by sources to be "fearing the worst", as Scotland Yard carried out forensic tests on the remains.

Miss McCluskie, who starred in the soap as Kerry Skinner in 2001, vanished from Bethnal Green, east London, last week.

Friends had been carrying out searches in the area and handing out leaflets.

Co-stars Natalie Cassidy and Brooke Kinsella both appealed for help finding her in Twitter.

Officers believe they know the identity of the victim but are awaiting further forensic tests before formal identification can take place.

I just find it doubly sad for the family if indeed it has been her brother that's done this, they've basically lost 2 children in one horrific blow.

I agree Cinds.    Very sad tale.  Really wish I could remember her.

She wasn't in it for very long - she played Ethel Skinner's great niece for a while. Natalie Cassidy would know her because her character dated Robbie Jackson at one point (Natalie's on-screen brother).

And yes: it's all very sad...

It is very sad and gruesome too.  The weird thing is that me and my husband did a 9 mile walk along that canal last Saturday, passing the place she was found.  It sounds awful saying this now but at one pointduring the walk (not sure whereabouts) I saw something floating in the water and had a fleeting thought about horrible it would be to see a body in the canal, not realising that a few days later this would happen.  I hope what I saw was just rubbish because its playing on my mind now
