It's an Americanism,up here in Scotland you didn't buy a babies wardrobe etc,until it was born and safe,things are different now.You did buy some babygrows etc so the little bugger wasn't naked etc. then you could go to town etc.

When I was pregnant with my first son, my mum and dad were buying the pram but they wouldn't let us have it in the house until he was born. It was considered bad luck, apparently.

Exactly the same for me ...................I so wanted to practice with my pram but my mum wouldn't let me have it until bubby was born safe and well.
It's so different nowadays.
They're very flexible, as long as there's gifts & food, you can't go wrong. Something pampering for the mum to be is nice too
I planned one for my Bestie but we never had it because the baby came 6 weeks early!
